Pingree set to face the real deal in Jordan Johnson

The Pingree football team will play Brooks Academy in the Clark-Francis Bowl Saturday afternoon at Endicott College (1:30 p.m.).

Locals named All-NESCAC in football

A trio of Northeastern Conference Small alums earned All-Nescac honors on the gridiron this fall.

Beverly grad Pat Bailey was named to the all-league second team as a running back for Tufts and also earned a spot as a return specialist.

Also for the Jumbos, Danvers’ Alex Perry earned a second team nod at defensive back.

Swampscott grad Tyler Tennant, meanwhile, was named to the second team defense after an outstanding season at Bowdoin.

Pingree football headed to NEPSAC bowl game

Fresh off of its fifth straight victory — a 46-0 bashing of Dexter Southfield on Saturday in Brookline — the Pingree School football team is going bowling.

The Highlanders (7-1) have been selected to play in theClark/Francis Bowl: this weekend, where they’ll face Brooks School (7-1). The game will be played at the Belmont Hill School Saturday (time TBA).

Ham-Wen girls, Swampscott’s Lindsay Walsh winners for girls XC

Coach Steve Sawyer’s Hamilton-Wenham runners took their fifth straight Division 4 EMass title Saturday at Franklin Park, aided by strong races by Kristen Ashley (runner-up) and Emily Senning (third overall). Cyrena Shiland was ninth and Kerry Phelan 13th to round out the top four for the Generals.

Swampscott’s Lindsay Walsh, meanwhile, won the individual title in the Division 3 race with a time of 19:06 — the best time run by a lady all day, topping the winners of the Division 1, 2 and 4 races by a good 10 seconds.

In Division 2, Monica Adler of Beverly was the runner-up and Masconomet’s Abbey D’Agostino finished third. Beverly’s Millie Chapman was ninth.

Local boys shine at Franklin Park

With the football players at home studying film and the runners out in the elements, here’s a quick peak at some local boys XC highlights. Check back later today for girls’ results and check Monday’s Salem News for a full report.

Division 1: St. John’s Prep’s A.J. Rossi finished 6th in 17:03 and helped the Eagles to a third place team finish. Peabody’s Evan Braz was ninth in 17:09.

Division 3: James Wigglesworth was ninth and Tucker Reece 11th to help Marblehead to a third place team finish.

Division 4: Ipswich’s Greg Krathwohl was third and the Hamilton-Wenham boys were third as a team behind Conor Lyons (fourth) and Chris Benevento (fifth). Fenwick’s Bill Harrington was ninth overall.

Just making the point that most football games are off for Saturday due to the forecasts of rough weather. Meanwhile, the state sectional cross country meets are still on!! So much for football being the toughest sports and one that plays in all elements.

Stewart has strong opener against Kentucky

Sophomore forward Caroline Stewart scored 14 points on 4-of-7 shooting in 19 minutes as the Boston University women’s basketball team dropped its season opener to the University of Kentucky Friday afternoon, 92-58.

Stewart, a former Masconomet standout, came off the bench and converted 6-of-9 free throws and grabbed two rebounds. She missed her only three-point attempt.

The 6-footer from Topsfield scored over 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds during her career at Masco. She was a two-time Salem News Player of the Year, and the Cape Ann League Most Valuable Player as a senior.

As a freshman at BU, Stewart played in 28 games and averaged two points per contest.

Last Warriors Picks before Thanksgiving

Phil Stacey won again last week to keep Mike Grenier at bay thanks to a monster day from George Sessoms (5 TDs!!). So that’s two in a row for Phil while the rest of us are still playing catch up. Here’s the final picks before the holiday.

Phil Stacey: Matt Barbuzzi, Swampscott QB — Big tuneup before the anticipated showdown on Thanksgiving.

Mike Grenier: Hayes Richardson, Winthrop QB — Miller Field is never an easy place to win for the Magicians, so they’ll need a big day out of Richardson despite being heavy favorites.

Matt Jenkins: David St. Pierre, NS Tech — The Bulldog QB is due for a big day and shoud be back for a vengeance after a rough weekend for the team last week.

Matt Williams: Tyler Coppola, St. John’s Prep — The entire BC High defense should be shadowing George Sessoms all afternoon, and that’ll open things up for the speedy Coppola.
