Phil Stacey

Salem News sports editor Phil Stacey has been working for the newspaper since September 1990. During his nearly two decades at The Salem News, he has become synonymous with the North Shore sports scene.

Having attended his first Beverly/Salem Thanksgiving football game with his father when he was 2 years old, Phil graduated from Beverly High School in 1987 and Salem State College in 1991. He began working as a sports stringer at The News while still at Salem State, becoming a full-time sports writer for the paper in 1994. He has been the newspaper’s sports editor since May 1997.

A huge fan of both U2 and The Grateful Dead, Phil has covered a myriad of events during his time at The Salem News, including the Super Bowl, the Stanley Cup finals, the Major League Baseball All-Star Game, several NCAA hockey championships, college football at Notre Dame and the 2001 U.S. Senior Open in golf. Locally, he has been the newspaper’s high school hockey beat writer since 1991 and also covers the Boston Bruins when his schedule allows.

Mike Grenier

A member of The Salem News sports staff since 1978, Mike Grenier brings a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm to his job. He has covered professional, college, high school and youth sports during his tenure, including witnessing several Boston Celtics world championships in person. A self-professed basketball junkie, Grenier is a graduate of Central Catholic High School in Lawrence and Northeastern University, and has seen Bruce Springsteen live in concert over 150 times.

Matt Jenkins

A life-long resident of Peabody, Matt Jenkins has been plugged into the North Shore sports scene his entire life. A graduate of Bishop Fenwick High School and Saint Anselm College in Manchester, N.H., Jenkins has been covering North Shore sports for this newspaper since 1998, when he graduated from St. A’s. A Dave Matthews Band devotee, Matt still plays pickup basketball in competitive leagues and works on lowering his golf handicap whenever he gets the chance.

Matt Williams

A recent addition to our full time staff, Matt Williams has quickly made a name for himself as one of the foremost authorities on all things North Shore Sports. Having lived his entire life in Peabody (save for four years of college at his beloved University of Maine), “Willie” played football and ran track at Peabody High. He enjoys covering and writing about all sports, particularly football, boys and girls hockey, track and baseball. A self-proclaimed political junkie, he also enjoys running and scouring the Web for sports tidbits.
