Matt Antonelli had surgery to remove the hamate hook bone from his left hand yesterday, and the San Diego Padres farmhand from Peabody is expected to miss the next 6-8 weeks of action.
The former first round draft pick had not played in any games this season — he was slated to start the season at Triple-A Portland, Ore. — after a terrific spring with the Padres due to his injury. When the fracture was discovered, the decision was made for the former St. John’s Prep standout to have surgery.
“I’m looking forward to healing quickly and getting back out on the field,” Antonelli said on his official blog, www.matthewantonelli.com/.
Speaking of Antonelli, he’s become an Internet sensation in recent days not for his play on the field, but for his deft athleticism off of it. He and Padres pitcher Wade LeBlanc made a video of themselves playing Nerf mini-hoop in their apartment — set to “Sirius” by the Alan Parsons Project” — and to be honest, it’s hilarious.
