Grabauskas on the chopping block

As if he didn’t have enough on his plate these days, it appears Gov. Patrick is gunning for MBTA general manager Dan Grabauskas.
The Ipswich resident has done a creditable job with what is one of the most-difficult-to-manage transit agencies in the country. But he’s a Republican, and worse, one who speaks his mind.
Nor does he [...]

Mayors and gun control

Spotted Salem Mayor Kim Driscoll’s name in in Tuesday’s edition of USA Today.
She was among 450 municipal chief executives from throughout the country (other locals included the mayors of Amesbury, Newburyport and Lawrence) who signed onto a full-page ad urging the U.S. Senate to reject an amendment that would make licenses to carry a concealed [...]

Key difference

Here’s perhaps the single most important ingredient that made Salem chief Bob St. Pierre’s police department different from so many others:
In Salem if a police officer gets into trouble, he or she knows there are going to be consequences. In too many other departments, if an officer gets out of line, the first instinct on [...]

Familiar face at British Open

Locals who watched Tom Watson’s heartbreaking loss at the British Open today may have recognized the man on his bag.
Caddie Neil Oxman was a former staffer to former Senate President Kevin Harrington of Salem and has many friends in local Democratic circles. He was among those in attendance at Harrington’s funeral at Immaculate Conception Church [...]
