He says he’s issued challenges via Facebook and the other social networking sites he relies on, but Robert McCarthy, the not-so-well-known GOP candidate for Congress in the 6th District, says he can’t get Bill Hudak to agree to a debate.
Hope he’s not holding his breath.
“What’s there to talk about? Who’s going to win?” Hudak said dismissively when asked about McCarthy’s lament this morning.
“Sandy’s a nice guy, but ….” Hudak campaign manager Kevin McCullough added when asked about it later in the day, apparently forgetting the opponent’s first name. The slight wasn’t surprising, even given the source, considering McCarthy’s lack of visibility in this race.
Hudak has received a lot of press, some of it for the wrong reasons (his birther views, the Scott Brown endorsement that wasn’t, etc.); but McCarthy, a Saugus attorney, remains an unknown to most, Democrat or Republican.
His taciturn style is not exactly conducive to campaigning in the

modern era. Meeting with The Salem News editorial board this week McCarthy was asked if he’d ever run for office before.
“Yes,” he answered.
Well, an editor pressed, “What office?”
“Board of Selectmen, Saugus,” McCarthy replied.
“Did you win?” the editor asked.
“No.”
Hudak, on the other hand, has been working this race long and hard. And with the primary just days away, and the result seemingly a foregone conclusion, his camp is now demanding U.S. Rep. John Tierney, D-Salem, agree to a debate or debates with the GOP nominee.
Hudak and his people better hope the incumbent doesn’t cop a similar attitude.
