Hypocrisy comes at a price.
Rep. Mary Grant, D-Beverly, was among those voting in 2004 to take away the governor’s power to fill a U.S. Senate vacancy. That’s because Mitt Romney, a Republican, occupied the corner office at the time. Now that’s there’s a Democrat sitting there, she saw fit to vote with the majority last week to change the law back again and allow Deval Patrick name a temporary successor to the late Ted Kennedy.
Looks like she earned herself a bona-fide opponent in 2010. The following release arrived via e-mail this morning:
Beverly resident Brett Schetzsle released the following statement today with regard to his candidacy for State Representative in the 6th Essex District:
“It is with great excitement that, today, I officially announce my candidacy for State Representative to represent the people of Beverly on Beacon Hill.
The time has come for our state to renew its promise as a place where families and businesses in this state see a brighter future ahead. To do this, the people of Beverly need a representative who will stand up for taxpayers and the businesses that create jobs, who will fight to maintain high standards for the education of our children and representatives who will stand up against the irresponsible budgets and spending by state government that ultimately result in lower levels of local aid for cities like Beverly and reductions in the services citizens need most.
The simple truth is that Massachusetts is losing the battle for its own future. We are losing middle class families who can’t afford to make ends meet in this state, losing jobs that are permanently relocating to states with a better business climate and losing the younger workers who will be capable of filling the jobs that do remain. The time has come for new voices and new ideas in the state legislature to deal with these issues and legislators who will put the needs of those who pay the state’s bills ahead of the agendas of political leaders on Beacon Hill.Brett Schetzsle
In the last week, Beverly’s current State Representative testified in favor of spending the state’s money to study how it can add more tolls on the roads of our state at a time when the state doesn’t have enough money to keep Beverly’s Registry branch open or maintain local aid levels and voted for the second time in five years to change election laws in order to suit the needs of her own political party. I do not believe that these actions, along with her consistent support for individual and business tax increases and the reckless spending they enable, benefit the people of Beverly or make this state a better place to live.
In fact, they are exactly the kind of actions which make it that much harder for families and businesses to make it in Massachusetts and for the state government to earn our trust. Any remaining doubts I may have had about running have now been eliminated. The time for a change is now.
My wife and I are fully invested in the future of this state and of Beverly. We are homeowners here, we have careers here and we are going to raise a family here. The future of Massachusetts and the future of Beverly is our future and I look forward to making it a better one as Beverly’s voice on Beacon Hill.”
