Beware of letters bearing gifts. Beverly resident Deb Debski asked us to warn residents of one of those ‘you won the sweepstakes’ scams.
Debski said she got a letter today saying she had won $125,000 in the “American Sweepstakes Lottery.” The letter included a check for $4875 from an Illinois bank that was supposedly a down payment on her winnings. To get the rest, all she had to do was send a check for $2875 to an address in Toronto.
Debski was smart enough to call that bank, which told her the check was a fake. In fact, they had already gotten lots of phone calls from people who got the same letter, some of whom had apparently fallen for the scheme.
Debski said the letter is well written and can seem real, so she wanted everyone to be on guard.
